Sperm donor gets visitation rights

06.21.04

A sperm donor was awarded visitation rights by a Quebec judge:

A man who donated his sperm so that a lesbian couple could have a child has been given visitation rights by a Quebec judge. The Journal de Montréal reported this morning that Quebec Superior Court Justice Suzanne Courteau granted the man the right to visit the child, three times per week, even though he isn’t officially recognized as the father’s child.

And why should he be recognized as the father? Is he helping to raise the child? Support it? To be its father in any way whatsoever? Does he even meet the most liberal, loose definition of fatherhood imaginable? No, absolutely not.

Yesterday was father’s day. A day to appreciate our fathers and all they have done for us. This man has done nothing for this baby. Being a father is about a lot more than simply donating some sperm. The courts should recognize that, and leave the decisions like these up to the baby’s real parents.

Guy visits a fertility clinic, goes into the Gents with a copy of Penthouse, gets paid for his ‘trouble’, and is all of a sudden, a dad with visiting privileges?!
And there’s still doubt in people’s minds as to why there’s disrespect for Lawyers? [Judges= jumped up Lawyers]

This guy was gay so I don’t think he was reading Penthouse… but point taken.

The man is one of the women’s ex-boyfriend. They had stayed friends after breaking up about 10 years ago. When she wanted a baby, she asked him to donate the sperm. Apparently, on finding out she was pregnant, she called him and said “allo papa.” She later let him visit the child without problems, until he asked to formalize his relationship to the baby. He has been around, and I do think he is entitled to visiting rights.

Sari said he was gay(?)

If I donate blood, and some sweet young thing gets it, do I get visiting rights?

Come on Danin, that’s not exactly the same. Its also not like he went to a sperm bank anonymously and then years later found out he had a child. He had a realtionship to the mother which is why he agreed and also why he was allowed to visit his child. He now has a relationship to the child. We’re always ranting about dead beat dads, well here’s one who wants to be a parent to his kid. I say let him.

“This morning”? You posted that at 1:02pm. Either you’re in a different time zone at the moment, or I’m really jealous of your ability to sleep in…

“This morning”?…heh….

If she wants his sperm and he wants to be a dad, how come (jeez, I’m tempted..)he just didn’t donate the old fashioned way and cut out the middlemen?

Uh… he’s gay and she’s a lesbian. At least according to the article. Kinda makes the old-fashioned way difficult…

This just gets weirder and weirder. I’m starting to lose empathy for the trials and tribulations of this fine young non-coupling pair.
