So, by my count, that’s 55 items out of 120 that I can cross off the list as having done so far. That adds up to about 46% of the list accomplished, with 50% of the year left. Not too shabby.

Now I gotta start working on finding that apartment. And learning Spanish. (Hmmm, maybe an apartment in Spain?)

My New Year’s Resolutions for 5769 are:

Walk to (and from) work. See the post below. This one’s an easy resolution to make now, and might be tougher to stick to when the minus-30 weather begins, but I’m certainly going to try to stick to it!

Pack my lunch. I’ve lapsed into laziness, and the cost of buying lunch several times a week is adding up fast. Bringing lunch is cheaper and healthier; eating out should be for special occasions only.

Eat healthier. Kinda follows logically from #2, but also includes a clause against sitting in front of the TV eating chocolate chips out of the package. (Yes, okay, we all know I’m a chocoholic!)

Improve my Spanish from Sesame Street-level to semi-conversational. The Coffee Break Spanish podcast is awesome.

Find a new volunteer project. I haven’t been involved in a good project in a while, and it’s time.

I usually end up not keeping new year’s resolutions. But this time, maybe by making them in September instead of December, it’ll be a better time of year to kick off new habits. It’s all about baby steps, anyway, not big leaps.

Shana Tova, everyone!

They’re rare, but they do exist. Check out the story of this New York construction worker who risked his life and jumped on a subway track to save a complete stranger who was having a seizure:

While waiting for a downtown Manhattan train, Autrey saw Cameron Hollopeter, a 19-year-old film student, suffering from some kind of medical episode. After stumbling down the platform, Hollopeter, of Littleton, Mass., fell onto the tracks with a train on its way into the station.

Autrey, traveling with his two young daughters, knew he had to do something.

“If I let him stay there by himself, he’s going to be dismembered,” the Navy veteran remembered thinking.

He jumped down to the tracks, a few feet below platform level, and rolled with the young man into a drainage trough — cold, wet and more than a little unpleasant smelling — between the rails as the southbound No. 1 train came into the 137th Street/City College station.

The train’s operator saw someone on the tracks and put the emergency brakes on. Some train cars passed over Autrey and Hollopeter with only a couple of inches to spare, but neither man suffered any harm from the incident.

Hollopeter was taken to a nearby hospital; Autrey refused medical attention — and then went to work.

According to bystanders, Autrey had time to shout to people to take care of his daughters before the train came. I can’t imagine what was going through his mind when he did it, but he was probably acting more on instinct than anything else:

Meanwhile, Autrey said the impact of the risky rescue was sinking in.

“It’s all hitting me now,” Autrey said. “I’m looking, and these trains are coming in now. … Wow, you did something pretty stupid.”

Perhaps, but it worked out well for him. It’s really nice to know that, with all the bad news out there, some people still care about others.

Happy 2007, all.

In the meantime, enjoy the holiday.

As some of you may notice, I didn’t do any kind of “year in review” or other such summary of the year that was 2002. It’s my sense that there are enough of them out there for those of you looking for them, and besides, we all lived through 2002 and we all have our own memories, important events, highlights and low points.

I do have to point out for the sake of posterity, though, that while 2002 was the last palindrome year until 2112, don’t think that 2003 isn’t a cool year as well. Wednesday (er, I mean Thursday, thanks Bill) did have the distinction of being the date 1/2/3.

I’m officially back from my vacation. Whistler had great powder, the Habs lost to the Canucks, and the word “service” is a contradiction in terms when it comes to the airlines. That about sums up my trip in a nutshell.

Beautiful sunny Whistler - purely to make you skiers out there very jealous!

Regular posting will resume tomorrow – I’m off to go hunt down some food.
