In Brief

  • Does anyone really still believe that Mugabe will go quietly? Didn’t think so.
  • Here we go again: The construction on St-Laurent launches full steam ahead into round 2… as though round 1 wasn’t a strong enough demonstration of the city’s incompetence.
  • Duh alert: Allophones have a harder time getting jobs than Francophones do in Quebec. Really? Is the sky blue, too?
  • You know it’s hockey fever when… even the police cars are flying Habs flags. Too bad our idiot mayor doesn’t give the same fan-dom rights to the firefighters.
  • The Habs decimated the Bruins on Thursday, but just barely eked out a win last night. 2-0 is 2-0 and we’ll take it, surely. But we’re going to have to step it up quite a bit tonight. Go Habs Go!
  • Hockey fever on the road: Boston is being invaded by supporters of the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge. Should be an interesting mix in the stands tonight at the TD Banknorth Centre. Then again, the Bruins fans deserve it for inadequately supporting their team. As of Friday when I last checked, there were still tickets available for tonight’s game on the Bruins’ official website. Shameful.
  • Did someone forget to tell it that it’s spring? After teasing us with gorgeous balmy weather, it’s been overcast, chilly, rainy and even threatening snow this weekend. Come back, sunshine!
  • Good friends… good crepes… goodbyes. Well, two out of three ain’t bad.

Weekend open thread

This is in response to those people who said it’s “time for a new thread”.

Here you go. You’re welcome. Please try to be nice.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Sometimes the weather behaves

Hot, sunny and beautiful all weekend, and raining on Monday morning. Sometimes, the weather just does what it’s supposed to.

I hope everyone enjoyed the glorious weekend.

Sunday night musings

Here I am on another Sunday night procrastinating going to sleep… because when I next wake up it will really be Monday and the weekend will be over. And there’s nothing more depressing than a Monday morning. So I’m determined to make it worse by being tired as a zombie. Makes perfect sense to me.

Anyway, this weekend did not rain as was predicted. In fact, it was sunny and beautiful. I hope everyone took advantage. Justin Trudeau sure did.

So what is it with the French and rejecting constitutions anyway? I think Chriac should simply insist on a Notwithstanding Clause.

Quote of the day: “President Bush has made a mistake in his show of support for Abbas (or Arafat in a Brooks Brothers Suit with better barber).” I never quite understood why Arafat, with all his millions, couldn’t afford to look better. Or, for that matter, why Suha never bought some sorely-needed plastic surgery. Oh, was that rude? I’m so sorry. I should know better than to insult dead terrorists. That would be uncivilized.

Speaking of terrorists, Abbas is making more threats, suggesting that suicide bombings “may be over” (yeah right) while threatening more if “progress” is not made. How, I wonder, does Abbas define “progress”? Israel is set to let 400 terrorists back on the streets, and the Palestinians are set to… do nothing but complain and launch more violent attacks, as usual. When was the last time the Palestinian side made any “gestures”?

On the home front, with Parliament set to get back to work tomorrow, amidst the scandals and non-confidence votes, Liberal MP Irwin Cotler dares to suggest that the government get some actual work done by passing proposed bills legalizing same-sex marriage and decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana. A valid argument. We’re paying all these people to govern, it’s about time they get on with it. Of course, the Tories oppose both bills, but I wonder whether Stephen Harper is capable of trying to attack the issues, or if he’s programmed to a single note and will keep hammering away on the sponsorship scandal instead?

Whoosh

That’s the sound of all the things happening in the world that are whizzing by as I attempt to segway from a business trip into a long weekend road trip.

The government survived by one vote, some Palestinian terrorists are firing mortars at Israelis, and the new Star Wars movie came out in theatres. No, I haven’t seen it yet. No, I’m not particularly fussed about it.

Have a good long weekend, everyone. Back Tuesday.

Things I love

  • Miss Vickie’s sweet chili and sour cream potato chips. (Thanks a lot for introducing me to this addiction, Andrea. One day I’ll get you back for that… somehow.)
  • The aroma of my parents’ house on a Friday afternoon, when dinner is in the oven. Nothing I cook ever smells that good.
  • Spring arriving in Montreal, and all the people crawling out from underground to reclaim the outdoors. The city comes back to life after a long winter around this time of year, and the feeling in the air is fantastic.
  • A good debate. About almost anything. The kind where you *really* get into it, but nobody takes it personally.
  • Accents. Especially really sexy ones, like Australian, British or South African.
  • Juliette et Chocolat’s hot chocolate. (Ioana, this addiction is your fault.)
  • Travel. It’s my addiction. I may run out of time or money but I know I’ll never run out of world to see.
  • Sleeping in. I love that I can do this now that Downstairs Noisy Neighbours finally turned down the volume of their 6am radio.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

No posting this weekend

I’ll be away from my computer this weekend (yay!) so posting will resume Monday. Have a good one!

Weekend update

I’m not Jimmy Fallon or Tina Fey, but hey, this is a blog, not a late-night TV show. Deal with it.

The devastation caused by Hurricane Charley is a real nightmare. So far, at least 16 people are dead. Hundreds more are homeless, having lost everything. The estimated damages have run into the billions.

It hasn’t been a very good start for Canada in the Olympics. Two days, zero medals. This is getting embarrassing. If Australia can dominate the medal count, why can’t we put on a better showing?

Weekend

And on that note… it’s sunny and beautiful out so I’m officially declaring the weekend begun.

Have a good one! And GO HABS GO!

Weekend update

I hope everyone had a nice weekend, spending time outside enjoying the beautiful weather.

In case you’re looking for some entertainment, check out the Link’s board for more on the story below, and a very indignant Adam Slater initiating a pissing contest. Reading the interaction I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry at the sheer idiocy of politics at Concordia.

Ah yes, and don’t forget to vote tomorrow!
