US admissions ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favour of racism:

In upholding the law school’s policy, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor said for the majority in the 5-4 ruling that student body diversity is a compelling state interest that can justify use of race in admissions decisions.

Sad.

I think the ruling is a good one…it allows AA to go on, but it compels the University to find more equitable ways to do it. The basic truth is that the system is still unfair to minorities in the United States and that is not good for the body politic as a whole.
Justice O’Connor’s comment, ‘ Still, O’Connor made clear the programs cannot continue indefinitely. “We expect that 25 years from now, the use of racial preferences will no longer be necessary to further the interest approved today.”‘ is relevant, I think. Its something that needs to be done now…but if it is allowed to work, it will become less and less necessary.

There was a study recently that looked at the gender participation rates in various programs at the University level. In this particular University, the % of males went something like:

    Engineering: 80%
    Teaching: 10%
    Nursing: 2%
    Life Sciences: 35%
    Overall: 40%

Conclusion of study? The engineering program was discriminating against women. I nearly fell off my chair laughing.
