I bet these kids will be bragging to their friends:
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling will give a midnight reading of the sixth book in her hugely successful series at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland to coincide with its publication, the writer announced Saturday.
Rowling said on her Web site that newspapers and bookshops in six countries will choose 70 children between ages 8 and 16 who aspire to be journalists to go to Edinburgh for the reading of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”
Those attending the reading early July 16 will get a copy of the book to read before questioning Rowling at a “children’s press conference” the next day, she said.

Fear not… for us Jewish people, it’s a good luck day. Or so I’m told. See more here.
Maybe I should’ve bought a lotto ticket.

By the way, you can now access this site with the URL segacs.com. It will forward you here.
I know, thrilling, ain’t it? Maybe I’ll eventually get the site off of Geocities and properly hosted, but for now, this will do. It’s all that fits in my budget, since I don’t have any fancy blogads or tip jars. (Though you’re always welcome to buy me presents).

Unfortunately I missed today’s mega-solidarity rally due to work overload and a nasty cold. But thousands of people made it downtown to wave the blue and white and cheer 57 years of Israeli independence.
Am Yisrael Chai!

That’s Canadian politics these days.
If today’s opposition motion in parliament passes, then the Liberals say they won’t view it as a no-confidence vote, and they’ll simply ignore it. However, it clearly is a no-confidence vote, and there’s only so long they’ll be able to deny it.
However, if the Conservatives get their way and do succeed in bringing down the Liberal government with this motion, then they’ll have won the battle but lost the war. They can trigger an election but they don’t have the support to win it… and the Liberals will get right back into power with another minority and we’ll start all over again.
If Harper had any political horse sense, he’d lay off the no confidence votes and try to let the Liberals govern for a little while. In the meantime, he’d make some good speeches, hammer home some policy points, and try to look like a statesman. Instead, he’s continuing to push for this pyrrhic victory, regardless of the cost.
This is what we call a lose-lose situation. Unless, of course, you’re Gilles Duceppe.
Update: As predicted, the Liberals lost the vote but are still denying that it means anything.
It may seem ridiculous but denial, in this case, is golden, since if the Liberals continue to attempt to govern despite the motion, and the Conservatives are forced to use petty tactics like trying to shut down parliament, it doesn’t take much to figure out who will benefit at the polls.

2:42am. The clock is mocking me.
Wide awake, not even close to sleep, and there’s no good excuse. The neighbours are quiet, for once. I didn’t overdose on caffeine today. I’m not even dreading the morning. (Well, now I am, because I know I’ll be exhausted. But aside from that, nope, no problems there.)
The worst part about insomnia? I know I’ll re-read this post in the morning and cringe. Somehow, 3am ramblings never seem nearly as coherent in daylight.
I gotta get me one of these phones to stop me from making stupid calls… not only while drunk, but also while wide awake in the wee hours of the morning.
And to think, in my student days, these were my most productive working hours. How things change.

COLLECTIVE SOUL ROCKS!!!
Ok, I’m feeling better now. (Pun intended).
I need to interrupt regularly scheduled programing to rave about tonight’s Collective Soul concert at the Metropolis. There is no other band that I know of that brings so much sheer energy to the stage. I’ve been blown away every one of the six previous occasions I saw the band, and I was blown away once again tonight. Absolutely phenomenal.
The world’s done shaking me down…

Looks like Karla Homolka’s moving to N.D.G. That’s my neighbourhood. And I’m not exactly thrilled she’s planning on moving in.
It’s fairly obvious to everyone that Homolka has no business being out on the streets… let alone my streets. If there was any justice in the world, they’d lock her up for good and throw away the key.

Anyone else think it’s cool that today’s date is 05/05/05?
Okay, I’m easily amused.

Today is Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust Remembrance Day.
It is a day to remember the 6 million who perished.

But beyond that, it is a day of reflection: on the world that let it happen, on Jewish identity before and after the Holocaust, on Israel and its role, and on where we go from here.
Sadly, this day gets more and more relevant each year, as antisemitism rises and the world sits idly by.
Meryl has some must-read links. Jewlicious has the story of the MTV Holocaust commemoration special, which is probably not as irreverant as it sounds (at least I hope not). Allison has second-grade humour with a bitter Holocaust twist. And Jewschool promotes a rally against the genocide going on in Sudan’s Darfur region – only the latest chapter in the countless episodes of “Again” that have occurred since we resolved “Never Again”.
