Shame that. Mila 18 has always been one of my favorite novels. Topaz as well.
He was a friend of my dad’s and i intervieewed him once — I felt that Exodus was truly well-writen but profoundly BAD book.
To avoid invasion of privacy, or whatever, he fictionalized everything, inventing his characters out of whole cloth.
He turned the Altalena into an airplane, while Ari ben Canaan, the Paul Newman character, appears to have been based on a woman! Yikes — talk about gender bending!
Anyway, he did a much better job on Mila 18 and QB VI, I think, but Ira Levin’s popular novels on Israel were superior Exodus.
Stan Brin
Of course they were fiction. They were written as fiction. That doesn’t make them bad.
Read Herman Wouk’s “The Hope” and “The Promise.”
Read both. Good books.
