Gotta give him props for this one: Russell Crowe has pledged aid to Talmud Torah in the wake of the firebombing. Apparently the movie star, who was filming in Toronto, heard about the hate crime and phoned the principal of the school to lend his support:
Tough guy actor Russell Crowe was so upset by a fire-bombing at a Jewish elementary school in Montreal, he called the school to offer a donation to help rebuild its library, a school spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
[ . . . ]
“He said he was very upset about what had happened that a place of learning should be attacked that way,” Paris said.
“He wanted to make sure that our students knew that he was thinking about them and that he was very upset about the fire-bombing,” Paris said.
I was starting to think that there were no Hollywood actors left with any kind of a conscience. Even if it was a publicity stunt, this is refreshing.
I don’t think it is a “publicity stunt.”
Why so cynical?
Take the support where you can get it!
If you’re calling me a cynic, guilty as charged. I view anything actors do as publicity stunts. But with all of Hollywood out marching in ANSWER rallies or pledging their support to Arafat and his cronies, it’s nice to see someone like Russell Crowe taking an interest in the Montreal Jewish community and in combating antisemitism. I do give him props for it.
The first article I found on this last night, from Canadian Press on the Toronto Star website, had this somewhat cryptic two sentences which I think reflect favourably on Russell Crowe for people cynical about his motives:
(continued)
I think it’s implying that he didn’t want this story to leak out and draw attention to himself, though, I suppose, if someone’s really cynical, they’d assume that Crowe knew it would leak out eventually and planned it that way so he’d come out looking selfless, but, still.
“Making movies, making music, and fighting (anti-semitism) ’round the world… Russell Crowe!” 🙂
Maybe he just felt bad about all those Jewish martyrs he met under the Colosseum.
I dunno, if you are a Hollywood actor hoping to suck up to the establishment, a better cause would be giving money to the poor Palestinians to help them fight zionist aggression.
I think the offer of RC is genuine, and we should appreciate it instead of trying to find the dark lining to the silver cloud.
In fact,
Hollywood is becoming less and less Jewish. Most, if not all the studios used to be run by Jews, but massive conglomerates now control this area. Another generation or so, and that’s it totally. Someone could write a book about the current decline of Jewish influence in Hollywood, so I too can’t see how Crowe is sucking up to the ‘moguls’.
If you think it’s a publicity stunt then ask Sari (in advertising) how much publicity this ‘stunt’ will really get him and whether this news item will get ‘massive coverage’ anywhere other than Jewish-related media worth a ‘publicity stunt’ liek this.
