Palestinian student elections

The CSU is a picnic compared to these guys (via Damian):

In a West Bank university election for the student leadership that focused on which party had killed the most Israelis, the violent Hamas swept to victory Wednesday, defeating Yasser Arafat’s Fatah.

[ . . . ]

At a debate, the Hamas candidate asked the Fatah candidate: “Hamas activists in this university killed 135 Zionists. How many did Fatah activists from Bir Zeit kill?”

The Fatah candidate refused to answer, suggesting his rival “look at the paper, go to the archives and see for yourself. Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades have not stopped fighting the occupation.”

Fatah set up models of Jewish settlements and then blew them up with fireworks. The display was meant to emphasize the group’s focus on attacking settlers and their communities – considered by Palestinians to be one of the most provocative elements of Israel’s occupation of territory they claim for a state.

Hamas countered by blowing up models of Israeli buses, a tribute to the dozens of suicide bombings its members have carried out in the past three years, killing hundreds of Israelis. Activists held samples of the group’s homemade Qassam rockets – often fired at Gaza Strip settlements and Israeli towns that border the coastal area.

Student issues were barely touched on because the Palestinians’ main problem is the Israeli occupation, candidates said.

[ . . . ]

[A university spokesperson] said the student elections have wider significance. “The Bir Zeit elections are like a barometer to measure the political mood on the Palestinian street.”

Suddenly, voting scandals, ripped-down posters, and debates over club funding don’t seem so bad. How many indications do we need like this one that the Palestinians have absolutely no interest in making peace? How much more crystal-clear does it get?

No justice, no peace.

Peace requires compromise, and compromise always involves a sacrifice of justice. Anyone who says “no justice, no peace” will get neither justice nor peace.

Well thank you Jonathan. Compromises may indeed be necessary, however, if one has to compromise the point of total injustice, I say again, no justice no peace. What’s that saying, I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees? (Watch that scatter brain moron Segacs go on about how I’m making death threats…lol)

But I thought the CSU was bin Laden’s youthwing (or so said B’nai Brith) isn’t that worse than Hamas?

Hanthala, what would you consider “total injustice” in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Would you consider the Taba proposals “totally unjust?”

One of the problems with the Palestinian leadership (note the word “leadership”) from the beginning is that it has regarded everything short of total victory as total injustice, thus letting the perfect become the enemy of the good.

“…the Palestinians have absolutely no interest in making peace”

Excuse me?
Which Palestinians?
Hold on a second and let me think this over…ALL Palestinians, every last one of them (population several million) have, in your mind, “absolutely no interest in making peace”. What kind of racist crap is this?
ALL Palestinians are certainly not advocating fighting Israel forever, albeit I am sure that there are some Palestinian segments that certainly do.
Your agument is, intellectually, akin to saying that all black men are rapists, all Jews are neo-cons, etc… While there are some black guys who rape women, and some jewish neo-cons, neither former group is wholly a portion of the latter.
Segacs, to claim that Palestinians, as a society, are uninterested in compromise speaks more about your personal racist indoctrination into Orientalist modes of thinking than anything else.
Although you will not admit it, I suppose that in your mind all Arabs are filthy, violent scream

(continued – mia culpa) …screaming yahoos incapable of existing as individuals outside of the city market; they exist more as pieces of a collective mind, with a collective mode of thinking, than as free rational agents capable of distinguishing between good and wrong. They therefore require domination, for their own good of course.

tisk tisk…I thought this nonsense had been relegated to Kipling’s age.

So I suppose whenever you say something about “the Israelis” then it’s racist, right uhh?

Anyway check the opinion polls – over 60% of Palestinians support suicide bombings, and over 80% think that there cannot be peace with Israel.
