It doesn’t get much more disgusting than this

08.10.04

A group of Jewish university students were attacked while touring Auschwitz by three French tourists:

Evidently incited by the presence of an Israeli flag wrapped around the shoulders of Tamar Schuri, an Israeli student from Ben Gurion University, the first assailant ran at the group while its members were being guided through a model gas chamber and crematoria and began swearing and hurling anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli insults.

“He told us to go back to Israel and said that we were stupid and should be ashamed to walk around with an Israeli flag,” testifies Maya Ober, a 21-year-old Polish student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan and member of the Polish Union of Jewish Students (PUSZ), which organized the 16-day summer learning program along with the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS).

After the initial altercation, a second assailant grabbed Ober by the arm. “One of the guys held me by the arm and wouldn’t let go,” says Ober, who lost several members of her family at Auschwitz. “I was afraid. I couldn’t move and I didn’t know what he was going to do.

“I was shocked. Although I have met anti-Semitism many times, I never expected to meet it at Auschwitz, where so many of my relatives were killed,” she says she spoke to the assailants in French and that in addition to being “brutish and vulgar,” their sentiments “made absolutely no sense.”

That’s the thing about antisemitism. It “makes absolutely no sense”. But that hasn’t helped it disappear in the last 2000 years.

(Via Damian Penny, who astutely points out that we’re about to hear some lame excuses as to why this is “anti-Zionism, not antisemitism”).

Ah, but you misunderstand!
They are French — it is in their
nature to be sophisticated (e.g.
revolting).

Excuse me for being politcally inocrrect but were any of the attackers Arab/Muslim? This could explain a lot.

Malia; why would you think that…?
Actually, I’d be happier if that were the case rather than having your regular domestic Froggie upping the ante.

By the way, whatever happened to ‘Hanthala’? She’d be perfect for ‘just a guy’.

Why were ‘tourists’ at Aushwitz?

Funny Dan. So let me get this straight. Racism against frogs and towel heads is OK and racism against other groups is bad?

Josh; I think you’re taking the expression out of context. Tourist or tourism simply means that your purpose is other than business ie cultural tours, religious reasons ( 2 wks. in Israel seeing the sights would likely include a visit to the Holocaust Memorial, yes?), etc.
I think most NA Jews would want to visit Aushwitz if they were taking a holiday in Northern Europe. I know that many of our non-Jewish friends and acqaintences have been there.
At the very least it’s a simple sign of respect for the victims of a monstrous crime.
It’s not quite the same as a trip to Disneyland.

Froggies aren’t a race, and I’ve never used the expression ‘towelhead’.
By the way, how’d you do that? Have you been lurking, you naughty thing?

I have absolutely nothing against individual Frenchies, it’s their politics that make an outhouse smell like lavender.
I’m amazed that you’d even consider defending France, you being the defender of the little guy, or is that only Palestinian little guys?
For the record (and I’ve stated this before) I’ve been boycotting anything from France for longer than you’ve been alive. My awakening came when French cops machinegunned striking students. I thought “so what’s the difference between these guys and the SS?”

Eisenhower should have booted DeGaul out of the plane at 20,000 ft…mid channel.
The world would be a better place by far.

The French aren’t a “race” (whatever that is anyway) but your comments about “frogs” are bigoted. I don’t like this kind of generalization. If you make the distinction between the French government and the French people, fine, make the difference, but state it clearly. I do the same with Israel. I bitch about Israel (or Israeli policy) not “the Israelis.” As for machine gunning unarmed protesters/strikers, I agree, but you’ve got to admit, Israel’s a pro at it.

I never said I wasn’t bigoted, what’s your point?
