Quote of the day

This from Canadian Immigration Minister Jon Volpe, commenting on the newly-announced eased immigration restrictions:

“We become Canadians by doing that which Canadians do,” Volpe said at a news conference. “We manifest our identity as Canadians by fulfilling our obligations and responsibilities as Canadians.”

Huh???

typical liberal circular logic. Like a dog chasing her tail.

Ok, the country NEEDS immigrants to supplement an ageing workforce; most would agree on that.

What bothers me are the family reunification aspects of the new policy.

Years ago *family reunification* concerned mostly refugees (East German dissidents, Soviet Jews etc) fleeing oppressive régimes. Family reunification in those cases was considered on grounds of compassion. That was sound policy.

Today, though, immigrants are economic migrants who move here largely out of choice; they want to improve their lives.

That being the case, and if the reasons we do this are mostly economic, then do we not undermine the whole purpose of immigration ( rejuvination of the workforce) by taking in parents and grand-parents as well?

To put it another way; does this new policy direction not have the potential to age Canada even faster?

There is another argument on the other side of it: if we do not allow economic migrants to bring the parents/grandparents into the country, the migrants will then have to send a portion of their earnings (Canadian money) back to the home country to sustain their parents/grandparents. Bringing the parents in would keep the money in country.
That being said, Volpe’s statement is among the worst bits of governmental nonsense I’ve seen in a long time.

What are the obligations and responsibilities for Canadians?
Pay your taxes. Obey the laws. Anything else?
And how is this different from any other nation?

    La-di-dah-dah.
