Conference on antisemitism

03.14.04

A 3-day conference on antisemitism kicked off today in Montreal, hosted by Jean Charest, and to include such speakers as Natan Sharansky. Unfortunately, as with most events featuring prominent Israeli speakers, security is tight and I wonder whether they will think to host a session on what it means that a conference on antisemitism requires so much extra security in the first place.

It’s a crazy world we live in.

The events were by ibnvitation opnly, like Netanyahu. They probably wanted to ensure that no opposing viewpoints, even those of Jewish groups with didfferent views from the organisers, were heard. They wanted no disagreement with the thesis that criticism of Israel was a priori anti-Semitic.

I wouldn’t worry, Joe. No speaker at the conference asserted that thesis. Who has, incidentally?

It would be convenient to spin this into another “brainwashed Zionists worship everything Israel does, gag all criticism anywhere” libel, wouldn’t it?

I was registered for the event, though wasn’t able to make it. The list of registrees included representatives from most major religions, including the Abrahamic faiths and so forth, right down to someone from the Church of Scientology (!). Some of the Montreal-based Quebec civil servants working in ethnic relations — French-Canadians, like most of the Quebec bureaucracy — were signed up as well. Generally it was a fairly mixed audience for a Jewish-orientated event.
